“Do you want to talk about today?” Summer asks as we lean back on the couch. “Not tonight. I like that this place is drama-free. Thank you for making that happen.” She widens her eyes, then groans. “You saw the magazines.” “Yeah. I wanted to thank you yesterday but thought bringing the evening up would just make you uncomfortable again. But thank you.” “You’re welcome.” She takes a small sip of wine, sinking lower on the couch. “What’s wrong?” “Just residual embarrassment for that night. I’ll get over it. Eventually.” I turn to her, framing her jaw with my hand, leaning in. “Summer, we’ve been over this.” A small sound escapes her, somewhere between a chuckle and a choke. “You probably forgot all about it already.” The gentleman thing would be to tell her I did. But I don’t have the energy to act any longer tonight, and I don’t want to act around her. I want to be honest, and something in her body language tips me off that she needs that honesty. “I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. The sight of your beautiful body is branded in my brain.” Her mouth pops open. “But... you said it wasn’t a big deal, that you’d seen plenty of actresses—” “I was trying to put you at ease.” By the looks of it, I did just the opposite. “You have no idea how hard it was to keep my control, Summer. I wanted you so badly.” She sucks in a breath. “You did?” “I still do.” She parts her lips, her eyes widening with surprise. I bring a hand to her face, caressing her cheek, resting my thumb at the corner of her mouth. Her skin is so smooth, it spurs a need deep inside me, to touch more of her. To taste her. Would she taste as sweet as I remember? Have I idealized the kiss, the memory growing sweeter, more real the more time we spent together, the more I learned about her? “I’ve missed you today,” I confess. “You did?” “Yeah.” “So did I. I arrived late at breakfast, and no one saved me muffins.” “I brought you something.” I pull the small package out of my pocket and take out the necklace with a little key pendant. “I saw it at LAX. It made me think of you.” “I love it.” “Let me put it on.” She turns around, baring her neck to me. I clasp the necklace, lingering with my fingers at the back of her neck. She lets out a little sigh. I trace the contour of her shoulder, needing to touch more of her. Summer tightens her grip on one of the couch cushions. I move closer until my chest almost touches her back, rubbing my thumb gently in the crook of her neck and shoulder. When she tilts her head slightly to the other side, giving me access, I don’t hesitate. I lower my mouth, pressing kisses to her skin. “Alex!” The vibration in her voice is the sexiest sound. I bring one hand to her waist, spin her around, then capture her mouth with mine. She parts her lips, granting me access, entwining her tongue with mine as soon as I request it. I deepen the kiss, moving my hand from her waist to her thigh, bunching up her dress. I want to feel her skin, taste it, because she tastes even better than I remember, and I want to explore all of her. “Alex,” she whispers again when I trail my mouth down her neck. “One night. Just this one night.”

Wordlessly, Daniel picks me up, carrying me to the bedroom. How did I end up in his arms for the second time today? After breakfast, I was too sick to take it all in, but now... oh my, am I making up for that. Every nerve ending where my bare skin presses against Daniel is perking up. The bits covered by the towel aren’t faring much better. A light shudder passes through me when Daniel lays me on the bed. To my dismay, he sits on the edge, pulling my left ankle in his lap, inspecting it. “Does it hurt?” “No.” I flex it a little, testing it out. “Definitely no sprain, but I’m going to have bruises tomorrow all over my left side. I think you bring me bad luck. I seem to have all sorts of accidents when I’m around you. First I nearly sprained my ankle at Blake and Clara’s wedding, and today—” “You scared ten years off my life today.” Daniel shakes his head, putting my foot back on the mattress. He’s frowning as he shifts his weight until he sits right next to my hips. I don’t like that frown one bit, but then I remember Daniel isn’t mine to make happy. I become acutely aware of Christopher's fingers trailing up and down my back.

"Thank you for including me in your celebration," he says.

"Lucas wanted you here."

Leaning into me, he whispers in my ear, "And you didn't?"

His proximity is intoxicating, and it prompts a confession out of me. "I wanted to see you so badly, I ached."

Christopher's fingers dig slightly into my back, and not really knowing what else to say, I pop a Turkish delight in my mouth. Oh my word, it's delicious.

"You have powdered sugar on your mouth," Christopher informs me.

Frantically I wipe away at it, but he chuckles. "You just smeared it everywhere."

He slips his hand under my chin, turning my head in his direction. Following suit, I shift in my spot until my upper body faces him too. Christopher dusts his fingers over my mouth, rubbing with his thumb on the left corner. Then he drags it down to the center of my lower lip and desire spears me instantly. A low moan tumbles out of me, and we both suck in our breath, the space between us suddenly feeling too small. He peers behind me, and it takes me a second to realize he must be checking whether there are guests in the booth opposite us. There aren't. I already checked earlier.

Christopher closes the distance between us, sealing his lips over mine. His kiss is like a breath of fresh air on a warm spring morning. Crisp and invigorating, taking over all of my senses. I succumb to it all, entwining my tongue with his, probing and tasting. He explores me like a man determined to uncover my deepest secrets.   Exclusive Excerpt 

 When I walk up Victoria’s porch on Saturday morning, I can hear a war waging inside the house. “Chloe, you can't wear that shirt again. It's dirty. Take it off now.” Victoria's voice sounds stern but tired. “But I like it,” Chloe retaliates. “It's dirty and smelly,” Lucas says. “Why do you want to be smelly?” For a few minutes, I wait outside the door for the spirits to calm down, but things just seem to escalate. It's best if I announce my presence, even if I'm twenty minutes early. The second I ring the bell, the voices die down but then start again, now as low whispers. After a few hurried orders of “behave” and “pick your socks up off the floor,” the door swings open. "Hi," I say. "You're here early," Victoria exclaims. She wears a bright orange robe she desperately tightens around her. Clearly she meant to change before my arrival. Something is different about her this morning. There are shadows under her eyes, and she looks utterly disheveled. She looks down at the gym bag in my hand as if considering something. "Should I wait outside, or in my car?" I joke because she seems to need some lighting up. "God, no." If possible, she gets even more flustered than before, shaking her head and opening the door wider. "Sorry, I'm a bit of a mess this morning." "There's no need to explain yourself to me," I assure her as I walk inside. The little devils are nowhere to be seen. "Where did the kids disappear to? I heard them when I walked up onto the porch." "Chloe agreed to change when she heard the doorbell. Sienna's helping her. Lucas went to change into soccer-appropriate clothes. Do you need to change?" "Nah, this will do. I'll change into a new shirt afterward." I point to the gym bag, in which I packed a towel, shower gel, and a new shirt. "Sorry for my outfit. I meant to change into something decent, but…." And maybe it's because she seems to get more distressed by the second, but I resort to the one thing I know will take her mind off it. "Hey, I'm a big proponent of indecency. You'd make my day if you told me you're wearing a camisole underneath that." Seeing her blush, I can't help leaning in and adding in a slight whisper, "And no panties." My words have the desired effect of making her laugh. "I'm not even awake enough to come up with a witty reply to that. Let's go in the kitchen. I'll make you a sandwich." As I follow her, I actually make an effort to avoid ogling her round, perky ass. Her robe is tightened around her middle, which highlights her other curves more than I wish it would. "Do you ever leave the house wearing just your robe?" "I know my choice of clothes is oddly colorful sometimes, but I don't go out of the house in what's practically underwear." "Not even to get the mail or something?" She turns around as we enter the small kitchen, pursing her lips. "What's with all the questions?" "Just wondering if any of your neighbors saw what I'm seeing right now. I might have to kill a few if the answer's yes." "Territorial much?" Her question takes me by surprise, and damn, I haven't been territorial with a woman in a long time. Victoria keeps surprising me. Not only that, she makes me surprise myself, and that has never happened before. Maybe this is why, despite my best efforts, I can't tone down the flirting. Okay, scratch that. I'm not even making a decent effort. If anything, I'm looking for any opportunity to make her blush. A slow smile spreads on her face. "Just think about all those men who saw me in a bikini." I love this woman's spirit and talent for banter. Still, that doesn't make me less of an ass. All I want is to prop her up on this counter, bury myself inside her, and lure sounds of pleasure out of her delicious mouth.
