Phoenix /fēniks/: (in classical mythology) a unique bird
inhabiting the Arabian Desert that burned itself on a funeral pyre before
rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle.
This isn’t mythology, it’s war, and Hendy is left in the
hands of Hell’s cruelest gatekeepers.
His team is killed before his very eyes, and despite his
efforts to save them, he’s captured and subjected to merciless torture—losing
virtually every piece of his identity but his pulse.
After his rescue, he returns home from Afghanistan, saddled
with facing the daunting task of healing his physical scars as well as the
invisible ones—his emotional demons.
Dr. Presley Cole isn’t one to shy away from a challenge.
Embarking on a new journey, she makes it her mission to prove to Hendy that his
life isn’t over; that he’s worthy of love.
Because sometimes even a phoenix needs help to rise…
Out of the Ashes.

This is the second book by RC Boldt that I have read. The first was Clam Jam and it was
hilarious. When I read the synopsis for
this, I had to read it. I’m a sucker for
a good military read.
There are funny parts in this book, but there are more heavy
parts. What Hendy goes through. It’s not pretty, or easy. He learns a lot. But when he has a friend like Kane, and a
woman like Presley, he can get better.
He just needs to “own it” like Kane tells him.
Plus “chicks dig scars” right?
Hendy meets Presley because the VA can’t really help him,
besides giving him more pills. I’m
surprised they gave him the good stuff, usually when you get treated at a
military treatment facility, you get 800mg of motrin…for everything. “Oh you had stomach surgery…here’s some
motrin.”
Ok back to what I was saying, they let him go to a
chiropractor. Presley is his doc and she
is great.
I love how Pres is quirky.
She can be silly. I love their
Jeopardy nights.
I do wish we could have seen Pres introducing Hendy to her
parents.
This is a fantastic read.
RC Boldt did a great job with Hendy’s struggles. Some authors have tried to make light of
struggles wounded vets, hell, all vets, go through. RC didn’t’ do that at all.
Now I’m gonna read Foster’s book. I really want Kane’s book too!
